PILAR EGÜEZ AND HER JOURNEY TOWARD HEALING FOODS

Words by Adelaida Jaramillo (IG @adeljar)

She is an anthropologist, founder of Comidas que Curan, a production company focused on health and wellness, and director of the documentary Raspando coco. In her native Ecuador, Pilar Egüez found a path to holistic health in traditional recipes.

I came across Pilar through a course on the Anthropology of Food in Ecuador. She, a Ph.D. in anthropology and Ecuadorian documentary filmmaker, is the founder of Comidas que Curan and discovered in traditional recipes a path to holistic health. After suffering severe health issues during her doctoral studies, she realized that the solution lay in the dishes of her childhood, such as the quinoa soup prepared by her mother and grandmother. This return to her roots not only transformed her health but also awakened in her the mission to document and dignify ancestral food knowledge, which has long been undervalued due to historical prejudices. «I saw it as an urgent matter to document and share this living wisdom, which could only be learned by delving into the memories of elders from different corners of the country and the world.

This was the origin of the Comidas que Curan initiative, which today is an independent production company dedicated to researching, documenting, and disseminating knowledge about traditional food and medicine through anthropology and film.» Through documentaries and collaborative workshops, Pilar has worked with older women from rural and Indigenous communities, showcasing their culinary wisdom to the world. More than just recipes, these dishes represent identity, sustainability, and emotional well-being. For Pilar, traditional foods are a form of holistic healing, connecting people to their heritage and fostering cultural pride.
